Tuesday Morning: Brown Station

 

Tuesday Morning we landed at Brown Station, our only stop on mainland Antarctica.  The other stops have been on coastal islands.  Brown is an Argentinean hut not currently manned due to COVID.

As expected, Gentoo penguins were waiting for us.  Winter is approaching  and soon these penguins will be swimming to warmer waters.  Because they depend on the ocean for food, ice would eliminate their ability to feed.

Penguins are unafraid of humans and happy to use any available area for a rookery.

Jan decided to trek over and visit the emergency hut.  They are scattered along the shoreline and equipped with food, fuel and warm gear to aid stranded travelers caught in bad weather.

All too soon, it was time to return to the Octantis.
