Wednesday: Ushuaia

We landed in Ushuaia about 8:00 AM Wednesday.  The ship was being prepared for our arrival but wouldn't be available until 11:00 for boarding.  (The previous passenger had only departed  and the ship required a complete cleaning.)  So Viking arranged another breakfast for us at a local restaurant to kill time.  On our way there, our bus passed the Ushuaia sign at the city limits.  Ushuaia is the southern most city in the world and has a population of more than 50,000.

In the distance we saw our first glimpse of the Octantis, our home for the next 18 days.

  • The temperature was a cool 45 degrees.  This is the temperature it remains nearly year around due to the ocean currents and mountains behind.  Exhausted from 2-days of travel, everyone was happy to board the ship and quarantine in their cabins for 7 hours until the on-board COVID tests were completed.  Everyone was negative!  This ship then was able to leave port about 8:00 PM Wednesday night.
